Perth-2007-1024

After 2 weeks or so, I’ve finally uploaded all of the photos that I took in Perth. That’s a total of 1416 photos I believe, totally to a not-so-impressive 1.8GB I think. Something like that. Anyway, here’s entry #1 of many of my great mid-semester break in Perth. I decided to split up the photos because one entry would just…I dunno, EXPLODE or something from having too many photos. I guess I’ll just jump in…

Some basic information first: I went to Perth with 6 other friends — Maria, Henning, Rainer, Simon, Thomas, and Chris. Together, we were a very fun group of 7. Here is a recount of our adventures in Western Australia.

We all left Melbourne around 4-ish. We arrived a bit early at the airport and waiting for our 6AM flight out to Perth.

We arrived in Perth in the early afternoon. Here is Perth airport. A pretty empty place at that time.

The bathrooms inside Perth airport had hand dryers that showed advertising on an LCD screen! TECHNOLOGY AT WORK.

We rode the bus to our hostel, Globe Backpackers. It was a “cosy” place. I’ll admit, it was fun, but it was just not what I was expecting in terms of accomodation. My first hostel experience!

When we checked in, we went to our rooms, only to find that people were already in there (and two of them were DOING IT or something). So we had to call reception and wait for them to clear out and for them to clean the place.

Here we are waiting! PATIENCE.

When we finally got settled and put all our stuff down, we decided to hit up Perth city central.

We walked down a long stretch of main roads towards the harbor/jetty area.

Near the water was this building that constantly had bells ringing. It was called the “Swan Bells” building. It was nice at first, but after a while, the bells really got to you.

When we got to the water’s edge, we decided to get something to eat since none of us had anything to eat all day.

I had the most delicious banana pancake EVER. YUM!

After eating, we walked along the edge of the water and into the Perth gardens.

Here’s Rainer and I standing on top of some monument.

The park that we were walking through had some odd signs.

Perth-2007-1083
The ground can never hold the camera steady. Tsk tsk.

Perth-2007-1091
Walking under the highway underpass. Nothing special, except that it was SO CLEAN. No graffiti.

Perth-2007-1102
Once again, the ground can’t seem to hold the camera. Ground sucks. Anyway, here we are ABOVE and OVER the overpass now.

Perth-2007-1105
Eventually, we got to this part on our trail that had a set of very steep stairs that went up the side of the hill (or mini-mountain). There were a lot of steps.

Perth-2007-1107
But yes, we did eventually reach the top and we had a great view of the city downtown district.

We kept walking a bit more and reached yet another part of the park (or garden, I’m not really sure what it was really).

Perth-2007-1118
Here’s a fairly large tree that we all decided to climb.

Haha, Rainer and Simon always goofing around.

Random photo: PRETTY!

Perth-2007-1177
The highlight of this day was when we walked through the Perth Botanical Garden. It was ENORMOUS and it was very pretty.

Perth-2007-1159
We took a bush-walk guided tour with this woman as the guide. She was very old and nice.

This parrot stole the show for a few minutes during the afternoon.

Perth-2007-1172
There were SOOO many mosquitos on the bush-walk. It was hard to pay attention to the old lady because most of us were busy swatting the “mozzies” away.

Another warning sign…

As the day ended, we ventured up the double-helix DNA stair observatory deck…thing. It basically just brought you up to a very high point so you can see very far.

When we got down from the DNA staircase, we walked back to our hostel to prepare dinner!

All the crosswalks in Australia have these beeping push-buttons. They beep at different audible rates to indicate which side of the street is for crossing and which side needs to wait to cross.

Here are some photos from inside our room at the Globe Backpackers hostel.
