Netflix recently recommended that I watch a movie called JCVD which stars Jean-Claude Van Damme as himself.

I usually steer clear of Jean-Claude Van Damme films because I’ve found all of the ones I’ve seen to be quite terrible. But I was persuaded to watch this particular movie because of its great reviews (it’s certified fresh on RottenTomatoes and has a 7.6/10 on IMDB).

The film is a comedic action flick that plays upon almost all of the stereotypes that Jean-Claude Van Damme has made for himself in his Hollywood movie career. In the movie, the actor plays himself as a down and out actor who returns to his hometown of Brussels where he finds that he is still a big star. Plagued by court battles and fees, the actor is forced to go to a local post office in Brussels to make a payment only to find himself in the middle of a burglary.

In the midst of the confusion, the police are then led to believe that Jean-Claude Van Damme is the culprit behind the hold-up which then triggers a series of amusing events that force the actor to reach back into his martial arts acting roots to foil the real crooks.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this flick and it really surprised me to say that I have found at least one Jean-Claude Van Damme movie worth watching and recommending.
