The New York Times published an article recently about the ever-increasing world of server farms around the globe. And as geeky and nerdy as that may sound, the article is worth reading and the slideshow that goes along with it is very fascinating too. The article goes into how companies try to reduce latency while serving web apps or webpages and how a mere millisecond of increased server time can lead to devastating results (for, a 100-millisecond delay reduces their sales by 1%!).

Anyway, if you want to get a better feel of what goes on behind the scenes at say, Gmail or Facebook, you should definitely read this article.
