I really love Gary Cialdella’s photo series in which he documents the changing and sometimes decaying face of the area known as the Calumet Region. According to PDN, the Calumet Region is located on the south shore of Lake Michigan and used to be an industrial town before it started to wither slowly away over time. His photos of suburban and urban landscapes show a city that is locked in a battle between trying to stay industrially relevant while attempting to keep its residents from fleeing to greener pastures.

If you like what you see, you can pick up Gary’s book, The Calumet Region: An American Place, at Amazon.com for $26.
