The Metropolitan Transportation Commission in San Francisco has approved $5 million to finalize designs for a steel mesh net 20 feet below the deck of the Golden Gate Bridge to prevent suicides. What I find a bit shocking — and maybe it’s because I don’t fully understand the engineering industry — is that on top of that $5 million officials estimate that they will need $45 million to actually install it. Dang, that’s a lot of money being poured into this project. And the thing is, it’s not even going to make the bridge look any better.
