At the end of last year, I reviewed the Mophie Juice Pack Air, a reasonably priced extended battery and protective case for the iPhone 4 that I had nothing but good things to say about. At the time, I thought it was one of the more refined extended battery options out there and today, I’m happy to announce that it’s been replaced by a better alternative. Well, sort of. It’s been replaced by another, and more powerful, extended battery also from Mophie — the Mophie Juice Pack Plus!

To start off, let’s go over some specs. The Mophie Juice Pack Plus packs 2000mAh in its slightly bulkier [than the Juice Pack Air] body. What does that mean in real-life terms? Well, when I was at 10% battery, I was able to charge my iPhone 4 completely to full and still have some juice left over for an emergency recharge if needed. That is just fabulous! But don’t think that the slightly bulkier build will make it not fit in your pocket — you’ll have no problem with that. With the Mophie Juice Pack Plus on your phone, it still leaves your iPhone 4 very thin and very much usable. And just like its smaller-capacity sibling, I very much like the larger shape of the phone mainly because it allows me to have a better grip on the device.

There are a couple of minor but great improvements done to the Mophie Juice Pack Plus that I want to go over. First are the non-recessed button spaces. One of the things that I had a gripe about on the Juice Pack Air was that the original iPhone’s buttons were hard to push because of the case’s design. This issue is solved with the Juice Pack Plus because the case itself comes with perfectly placed buttons for volume and the power/sleep/mute button. No more trying to fit fat fingers into little spaces to get that song louder. Another thing that’s a good change is that Mophie decided to dump the silver lining on the outside edge and replace it with 4 colors that don’t look as cheap as the silver paint. It now comes in black, cyan, magenta, and yellow.

The Juice Pack Plus is wonderful to hold in your hand. It’s made from soft-touch plastic and is really smooth and easy to hold (not too grippy, not too slippery either). The device has an on/off switch at the bottom left corner so that you can choose when you want to have your battery recharged. A simple flick of that switch and you’re connected to a mobile power source! At the very bottom of the Juice Pack Plus is the familiar power light indicators telling you how much juice is left in your pack. And of course, the designers at Mophie left speaker and mic holes at the bottom too so your music and voice won’t be muted through the case.

At the bottom right is the micro-USB charging port which conveniently also acts as a link to your computer if you aren’t able to find an iPhone cable nearby (micro-USB is just about standard on most new phones so finding one of those cables won’t be too hard). And of course, the great thing about this is that it acts as an all-around protective case so a drop or two won’t damage your actual phone.

For $20 more than the Juice Pack Air, the Plus is a very good option to consider if you really are a power-user on your iPhone 4. I’ve used it for the past month or so and have had the Plus save me from a dead phone more than a handful of times already and I highly recommend it.

You can pick one up in black, cyan, magenta, or yellow at for $99 and say goodbye to your iPhone 4 battery woes!
