Spending nearly a month in testing, the Ignoble MONA Cocoon Backpack has shown that it deserves a place in my permanent backpack lineup. The MONA Cocoon Backpack is a medium-sized backpack made in Los Angeles by two brothers who are obsessed with black, functional, comfortable and eye-catching bag designs. And I have to say, they hit it right with this one.

Made of a super-tight weave nylon exterior (23ot nylon), the backpack wicks off water easily. While it’s not made to withstand you wearing it in a torrential downpour, it should hold up very nicely in light to moderate rain.

On the back of the backpack, you get two sturdy padded straps along with a padded exterior back that lays very comfortably on your own back even when it’s jam-packed with goods. There is a cross-strap that goes over your chest to stabilize loads and overall, I never found myself struggling to lift, carry, or haul this bag stuffed to the top. My only wish was that the buckles were made of either metal (aluminum to maintain lightweight?) and/or slightly stronger plastic. They didn’t break on me, but the plastic buckles seemed like a slight misfit on this backpack.

The front side of the back has a neat stash pocket that extends the length of the bag. Good for documents, pens, paper, letters, etc. Thin but big things go here.

In the main compartment you’re given a large 32L storage space big enough for a 15″ laptop. And there’s a hanging zippered pocket inside to keep loose articles from getting crushed (I found this as a good place for my wallet, phone, and earbuds).

At the very top of the exterior of the bag you’ll also find a small hidden zippered pocket that I didn’t find much use for but I could imagine fitting more pens and notebooks into easily.

I should also mention that there are compression straps on each side to help manage smaller loads and lift handles on both the top and bottom of the bag to aid in lifting no matter what end your bag stands on.

Overall, I really like this bag. It’s got a really sleek unassuming appearance that I can wear on any day and best of all, it’s made entirely right here in the USA. In a day and age when outsourcing bags to other countries is a cheaper option, I really praise the guys at Ignoble for keeping things on American shores and doing a fantastic job of putting American backpack making in a good light. I love this bag, there’s no doubt about it, and I can’t wait to see what else comes from this company in the years to come. Pick up a MONA Cocoon Backpack now for $219.99 – a great price in my honest opinion for the quality of bag you’re buying.

The brothers over at Ignoble Bags can take much better photos than me, so head on over there to see the bag on white!
