I think every album should have some sort of context to it. Whether it’s from the producing side or the listener’s side, an album as a whole should reflect the current times, trials, and joys of a particular time period. For the listener, this context changes obviously more than the creators and I think that’s one of the beauties of music. You remember a song for a certain reason and during a certain time and maybe when you listen to it again years later it brings you back to that point but also reminds you how far you’ve come from that point.

If you’ve been a reader of Doobybrain for a long time you might remember way back in the day when I used to periodically release mixes via Megaupload/Rapidshare. It’s been a very, very, very long time since my last upload, so here’s a new one to mark my move to Los Angeles (a fitting “album cover” don’t you think?).

I don’t want to confuse listeners though — despite the mix being called “Like A California King”, this tracklist won’t feature many songs that evoke the all-sun-and-no-cares feelings that so many people associate with California. Like my mixes before, this one is strictly my songs of the moment that I enjoy in the car and at the office. A time capsule of sorts for myself, but hopefully one that you can enjoy too.

Here’s the tracklist:

  1. Cassius – I <3 U SO
  2. Breakbot – Baby I’m Yours
  3. Kitten – G#
  4. Van She – Kelly
  5. Nero – My Eyes
  6. Sleigh Bells – Rill Rill
  7. Clara C – Quesadilla
  8. Sleigh Bells – Comeback Kid
  9. Kavinsky – Pacific Coast Highway
  10. Mayer Hawthorne – The Walk
  11. M.I.A. – Bad Girls
  12. MUTEMATH – In No Time
  13. Allen Stone – Say So
  14. Chromeo – Night By Night

And in the interest of the future web, I am no longer giving links to download the album. Who downloads music now anyway? The whole thing can be streamed below or subscribed to via this Spotify link.
