This is one of the craziest things I’ve ever read about on Kottke. In a 1993 NBA playoff game between the Seattle SuperSonics and the Houston Rockets, refs, fans, and just about everybody watching for the last 19 years somehow missed the fact that a 6th player (#22) on the Rockets just goes ahead and jumps onto the court during the final moments of the game.

The discovery was made and revisited by ESPN writer Ethan Sherwood Strauss in this fantastic post about how the play with the extra man COULD have actually been a great winning tactic if it was done on purpose. But it seems player #22 was just overly excited and jumped onto the court without even knowing he did. An incredibly interesting read.

If you’re interested in seeing the infraction, head to the 16:50 mark.
