So I just learned that in 1980, the US Defense Department tried to outfit a C-130 cargo airplane with rockets so that it could be used in rescue missions (specifically in Iran). The purpose of the rockets were to allow the plane to take off and land in about 300-400 feet of runway instead of the 1000+ it needed normally. Rockets placed at the rear of the aircraft would act like rocket boosters on a fighter jet to propel the plane forward while rockets placed near the cockpit exterior would generate opposing thrust to slow an aircraft down at an extreme rate.

The operation codenamed Credible Sport was not a success. The aircraft crashed and the plans were scrapped.
