Some poignant words from Nate Silver to the class of 2013 at Ripon College. He encourages people to look and be able to interpret data in a world that is increasingly becoming data-driven and complex.

In addition, he notes that data isn’t everything. That graduates should go on to be well-rounded in lots of areas — anything that interests them basically.

Studies of experts who make data-driven decisions find that they are more likely to be successful when they read widely, consult for advice broadly, and take a multi-disciplinary approach rather than specializing too much. Likewise, in private business, start-ups that require their employees take on a greater range of responsibilities sometimes topple much larger businesses that become bureaucratic and inflexible.
