I’m kind of confused at the response I’ve been reading surrounding this video posted to Gothamist. There’s some anger being thrown from all directions, but it seems that most people aren’t blaming the cab occupant for not looking before opening the doors. If this were me I’d be so pissed at the person opening the door because there’s no reason that this should have happened, especially since the door was being open into the bike lane.

It’s such a shame that people aren’t taught to look before opening the doors. I feel like this should be a given, not unlike how we teach kids to buckle their seatbelts when they ride in a car (one good way is to copy how they teach kids to open doors in the Netherlands by reaching for the door handle with the opposite hand to force the body to turn around and look). The only person to blame here, in my opinion, is the idiot opening the door.
